Overview:

The Nuclear and Radiological Support Services Group of the Nuclear and Radiological Protection Division (NRPD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites applications for the Nuclear and Radiological Protection Operations Technical Support Manager. ORNL is the largest U.S. Department of Energy Science and Energy Laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. The NRPD is responsible forpartnering with operations and research staff to support the science mission while protecting staff from nuclear and radiological hazards and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. The NRPD operational framework consists of programmatic and operational elements critical for managing safe and compliant nuclear and radiological operations.

Significant Duties/Responsibilities:

The Nuclear and Radiological Protection Operations Technical Support Manager manages and maintains various elements of the ORNL radiological protection program and manages a team of Radiological Engineers supporting radiological field operations. The position reports to the Group Leader for Nuclear and Radiological Support Services. It serves as the NRPD point of contact with ORNL staff regarding program implementation and with NRPD staff to provide technical support to complex issues.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Manage a team of radiological engineers to support radiological field operations and sustain the ORNL Radiological Protection Program.
  • Manage and oversee several NRPD Programs: Fetal Protection, Glovebox Safety, ALARA Design and control, Sealed Radioactive Source Control, and Radiation-Generating Devices.
  • Manage NRPD documentation, including document life cycle, Technical Basis Documents, procedures, guides, technical evaluations, and survey plans.
  • Responsible for ensuring efficient and reliable operation of the Document Organization and Control System used to manage NRPD Documents.
  • Provide technical support to the NRPD radiological safety training program as needed.
  • Serve on the ORNL Emergency Operations Center support team as assigned.
  • Demonstrate Safety Leadership by influencing a balanced perspective on risk tolerance through consistent communication and actions.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BSdegree in a technical discipline plus eight years of relevant experience. Additional years of related experience may be considered to satisfy educational requirements.
  • Working knowledge of regulatory requirements associated with radioactive material, radiation-generating devices, and source control requirements.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills working in a complex, high-hazard radiological work environment.
  • Must be capable of obtaining and maintaining a minimum of a DOE Q clearance.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and be knowledgeable of standard workplace personal computer applications.
  • This position is a Workplace Substance Abuse program (WSAP) testing designed position that requires passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an
  • ongoing random drug testing program in which employees are subject to being randomly selected for testing.
  • The ideal candidate must be a strong analytical and strategic thinker, have planning, organizing, and problem-solving skills, and a commitment to exceptional customer service and teamwork.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active certification by the National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists
  • Radiation safety principles for radiation-generating device operation and safety interlocks.
  • Previous Radiological Engineering experience implementing the ORNL Radiological Protection Program
  • Technical background with an extensive understanding of health physics principles.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter who can work independently and participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines and adapt to ever-changing needs.

Physical Requirements:

Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after the offer.

Q Clearance:

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
