Overview:

Advanced Engineering Technologies (AET) Group is seeking a dynamic individual to support our organization. The position involves mechanical engineering support for facility and chemical process design and engineering in a research and development atmosphere. You will support testing within the critical nuclear nonproliferation mission space. Projects will consist of cradle to grave process design, build, and operation as well as operation, maintenance, and modification of existing processes

With technical mentorship from a senior level Mechanical Engineer, the successful candidate will:

  • Contribute to engineering document development such as drawings, reports, specifications, and studies.
  • Perform routine research and develop recommendations for process design, equipment, and/or materials selection.
  • Hands-on construction of processes.
  • Prepare basic engineering calculations following standard methods and principles used in engineering analysis.Use and develop an understanding of industry codes and standard practices.

AET is a group within the Nuclear Nonproliferation Division (NND) at Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL). The NND is a division operating within the National Security Sciences Directorate at ORNL. NND staff contributes world class research, technology development, risk assessment, and systems analysis related to nonproliferation and counterproliferation. The division activities play a primary role in implementation of national policy issues that strive to ensure global nuclear security. One of the major focus areas of the AET group is the development of sophisticated approaches to operation, characterization, and analysis of nuclear fuel cycle processes. The group specializes in the application of engineering principles supporting the characterization of processes and related materials. The AET group collaborates and works with staff from other groups within NND and ORNL to assure the full expertise of fuel cycle processes are applied to meet sponsor needs.

Major Duties / Responsibilities:

Our successful candidate, in collaboration with other principal investigators and project management at ORNL, will work in design, procurement, fabrication, assembly, and operation of test stands and equipment in support of test stands. In this position the candidate will be encouraged to interact with various ORNL staff as well as internal and external sponsors. Thecandidate is expected to collaborate with co-workers and management as well as independently; to fully detail work performed in the forms of technical reports, papers and presentations; and to participate in development of research proposals. Excellent communication ability including verbal, presentation, and writing skills are required. You will work with principal investigators, management, engineers, fabricators, modelers, and test campaign personnel.

Required Qualifications:

  • A BS in Mechanical Engineering and a minimum of 2 years (or MS+1) of related experience, or equivalent, is required with proven experience in the design, fabrication, and/or operation of chemical processes and test stands and/or sophisticated mechanical systems.
  • Experience with 3D solid modeling (preferably Solidworks) and design software packages.
  • Experience developing drawings, reports, other documents while working with an engineering design data management system.
  • Proven experience planning and completing mechanical design plans, such as general arrangements, piping isometrics, piping composites, pipe support drawings, and equipment location drawings.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and travel is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven experience working independently and as a member of a design team; planning and implementing mechanical design projects for support utilities and infrastructure such as plant air, chilled water, and other process service processes.
  • Experience operating with and adhering to engineering design procedures and processes.
  • Experience in maintaining high levels of process documentation and quality assurance.
  • TS/SCI Clearance

Special Requirement:

SCI clearance:

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an Secret Compartmental Investigation (SCI) clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug

testing program. In addition, due the SCI, you may be also be subject to random polygraph testing.

This position is a full-time staff position.
