Job Description

Requisition Id11461

Overview:

The Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks a researcher who will focus on cryogenic and monochromated Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS) for quantum materials research. This position resides in the Nanomaterials Characterization Section in the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD), at ORNL.

As part of our research team, you will advance research directions in quantum materials research, working with team members and collaborators to discover, understand, and exploit quantum phenomena in materials. You will also be responsible for advancing microscopy techniques, with a focus on integrating cryogenic 4D-STEM and monochromated EELS within situ electric and magnetic field applications. This will enable the mapping of spatial distributions of charge, lattice, spin, and their coupling in materials. As a staff scientist at ORNL, you are expected to carry out high-impact science projects with the external scientific community through open collaboration and conduct in-house research to discover, understand, and exploit functional nanomaterials.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research using advanced monochromated aberration-corrected STEM and EELS

  • Develop in situ and cryogenic STEM imaging and spectroscopy techniques to advance studies of quantum phenomena

  • Publishing scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner as a leading author and a co-author

  • Collaborating with scientists internal and external to ORNL

  • Reporting and presenting research results in relevant meetings and to corresponding project leaders

  • Delivering ORNL's mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility by encouraging a respectful workplace - in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in materials science or physics and postdoctoral experience in a relevant field

  • Experiencein STEM and EELS

  • Programming and data analysis skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least three years of experience with STEM and EELS

  • Experience in cryogenic STEM and EELS

  • Advanced Python programming skills

  • Excellent publication record demonstrating electron microscopy expertise

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.

  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and thrive in a dynamic environment.

Benefits at ORNL:

ORNL offers competitive pay and benefits programs to attract and retain hardworking people. The laboratory offers many employee benefits, including medical and retirement plans and flexible work hours, to help you and your family live happy and healthy. Employee amenities such as on-site fitness, banking, and cafeteria facilities are also provided for convenience.
